Reading text

In the coastal town of Saint-Marc, Haiti, a group of high school students decided they had seen enough. Every morning, on their way to school, they walked past the beach of La Saline, which was covered with plastic bottles, old tires, and garbage. The smell was unbearable, and the beautiful bay they had heard about in stories was slowly dying. "I remember my grandmother telling me that when she was young, she used to swim here every Sunday," said 17-year-old Lovely Saint-Louis. "Now you can't even touch the water without feeling sick." The students tried to talk to the mayor's office, but nothing happened. They wrote letters, organized petitions, and even went to the local radio station. For months, no one listened. Then, they decided to take action themselves. Every Saturday morning, Lovely and ten of her classmates arrived at the beach with old rice sacks and gloves. They picked up trash for three hours, under the hot sun. At first, people laughed at them. Some said they were wasting their time. But the students didn't give up. After two months, something changed. A fisherman brought his son to help. Then a shop owner donated new gloves and bags. The local priest announced the initiative during mass. Soon, over fifty people were coming every weekend. Today, the beach of La Saline is not completely clean, but it is getting better. The municipality has finally installed garbage bins. Lovely and her friends have created an organization called "Jean Limyè" — Blue Light. They now visit schools in other cities to share their experience. "It's not just about the beach," Lovely explains. "It's about showing that young people can make a difference. We don't need to wait for permission to do what is right."

III. PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE — Model answer

"I understand that you're frustrated. We have been working for six months and the beach is still not perfect. But look at what we have already achieved: the municipality installed bins because of our actions. More people are joining us every week. Remember Lovely's story: she didn't give up, and today her organization is inspiring other cities. Change takes time. Every piece of trash we remove is one less piece polluting the ocean. We are not just cleaning a beach; we are changing mentalities. Let's continue together."

IV. DISCURSIVE COMPETENCE — Model answer (Topic 1)

I strongly agree that young people have the power to change their community. The text about Lovely and her friends in Saint-Marc proves it. They were just high school students, but they didn't wait for adults to solve the problem. They started alone, faced mockery, and persisted. Today, they have an organization, and their beach is cleaner. In my own neighborhood, I have seen young people organize tutoring for struggling kids, plant trees, and clean streets. Adults often underestimate us, but we have energy, creativity, and determination. We don't need permission to do what is right. We just need to start.
