Reading text

In the rural commune of Thomonde, in Haiti's Central Plateau, a young nurse named Dr. Rose-Merlane Monestine made a decision that would change her community forever. After graduating from medical school in Port-au-Prince, Rose-Merlane could have stayed in the capital and earned a comfortable salary. Many of her classmates did. But she remembered the words of her grandmother, who had raised her: "A doctor's place is where people need them most." So she returned to Thomonde, a town of 60,000 people with only one small health center. When she arrived, she found a clinic with no running water, intermittent electricity, and empty shelves. There were no medicines for hypertension, diabetes, or even basic painkillers. "I cried the first week," Rose-Merlane admits. "I asked myself: what am I doing here? I cannot treat patients without medicine." But instead of leaving, she started knocking on doors. She visited the mayor, local business owners, and the Ministry of Health. She spoke on the radio, explaining that preventable diseases were killing people because they couldn't access basic care. She organized fundraising events, wrote grant proposals, and trained community health workers. After three years, the clinic has changed. There is now a solar panel providing electricity. A water filtration system was installed by an international NGO. The shelves are stocked with essential medicines. Pregnant women no longer walk six hours to deliver their babies. Last month, the Ministry of Health officially recognized Rose-Merlane's clinic as a model for rural healthcare in Haiti. Two young doctors from Port-au-Prince have just joined her staff. "You don't need to be a minister to change things," Rose-Merlane says. "You just need to start."

III. PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE — Model answer

"I understand that both options are difficult. The private clinic offers financial security, but the rural health center offers purpose. Remember Dr. Rose-Merlane's story. She chose to go where she was needed most, and today she has changed an entire community. Money is important, but it is not everything. If you take the rural position, you will gain experience that few doctors have. You will save lives that would otherwise be lost. You can always move to the city later, but this opportunity to serve may not come again. I would support you whatever you decide, but I hope you choose to make a difference."

IV. DISCURSIVE COMPETENCE — Model answer (Topic 1)

I strongly agree with the statement that a doctor's place is where people need them most. Medicine is not just a career; it is a vocation. Dr. Rose-Merlane Monestine could have stayed in Port-au-Prince and earned a high salary. Instead, she chose to serve the rural poor in Thomonde. Because of her decision, thousands of people now have access to healthcare. Pregnant women no longer walk six hours to deliver their babies. This is the true meaning of being a doctor. In my opinion, the value of a medical professional should not be measured by their salary, but by the lives they touch. Haiti needs more professionals like Rose-Merlane who are willing to serve where help is needed most, not where money is most abundant.
